Hi all,
Despite never having heard the surname Sproul before now, my Dads YDNA results confirm I am of this family! This is exciting as I have been researching my family tree for over 20 years and it has given me a whole new area to look into !
As far as I can tell, none of my Fathers direct male line have ever been anywhere other than Scotland so I am particularly interested in the Scottish Sprouls (of all name spellings!)
Without links to any particular family at present, I am starting to compile a picture of the various Sproul families in and around Renfrewshire around 1700-1800. I would love to hear from anyone who is researching family from this area.
Regards
Catriona.
Hi James !
I don’t really have a Sproule line as it seems my Sproule DNA connections date to before surname times. However, I am interested in helping Joe and Kate from the group by gathering a general picture of all the Scottish Sproule families to help further the project. I am trying to collate as much info as possible on a master tree and would love to include your line if you were happy to share information on your Scottish Sproules. My email is cat_flap@hotmail.com
Many thanks
Cat
Hi Catriona
As far back as I can go on my branch of the Sproulls, they were of Cowden and my x3 great grandfather left NetherCraigs near Paisley for Nova Scotia in March of 1823. I have a lot of information if this is your line.
Welcome to the 'family'! Indeed, we are finding a number of people with Lowland Scot surnames such as Wilson, Brown etc. have evidence of an ancient Y DNA genetic linkage to the Spreulls/Sprouls. This may well pre-date the widespread use of surnames. The Y DNA for the Spreulls and associated families is not Celtic, and we do not know specifically where the Spreulls originated and when they arrived in Scotland - but having cousins such as your family join the DNA project might help us with this puzzle and discover more about our common ancestors.
